PAWS tried to give the Kirkhams notice before bringing cats to the rescue, but there had been several times when PAWS employees arrived unannounced, Morris said. Again, there was nothing amiss, she noted.

The Animal Control Service still was evaluating their health Tuesday morning.

The rest of the cats have been quarantined as veterinarians assess their health. None of the cats are adoptable at Puma Platform Elemental

The Sheriff's Office sent an undercover deputy to adopt two cats, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. The cats were taken to a veterinarian, who diagnosed them with feline leukemia, upper respiratory infection, bronchitis, flea infestation, tapeworm infestation and several other diseases, Allan Kirkham's arrest report said. The cats were euthanized.

All the PAWS cats were tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, vaccinated and sterilized, and most had microchips embedded before they were given to the Kirkhams, Morris said.

Some may have been sent with lingering upper respiratory infections, but they also were sent with medicine, Morris said.

"These people went completely out of their way to make their cats comfortable," Morris said. "Maybe they did become overwhelmed. I wish now that Allan had told me no if there were too many."

The Santa Rosa County Animal Control Service reported in May several health nuisance violations to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies also had received complaints that the Kirkham Kattery Rescue Inc. was adopting out cats with Puma Platform Tan contagious diseases.

PAWS had been inundated with cats and was trying to save healthy animals from being euthanized, Morris said.

Residents complained about sick adopted cats, smells coming from the home, sick cats at the rescue and about 100 cats roaming in the home, the news release reported.

The Panhandle Animal Welfare Society had sent cats to the rescue sporadically for about a year, said Vicki Morris, PAWS' clinic supervisor. She couldn't estimate how many cats had been sent, but said sometimes PAWS sent 10 to 15 cats at a time.

PAWS sends cats to nonprofit organizations that it has inspected, Morris said. PAWS has sent animals to Save Our Cats and Kittens and Feline Friends of Destin, but not as many as it sent the Kattery Rescue, she said.

Morris said she went to the Kirkhams' facility several times and it was always "immaculate." She said the garage and home were clean and organized, and the cats appeared healthy.

The rescue has been listed at a nonprofit since May 2005, according to Kirkham's arrest report.

She saw about 100 cats at the home, but there were always volunteers helping out, she said.

the Sheriff's Office searched the home and found 225 cats. Eighty six cats tested positive for feline leukemia and were euthanized Monday night, said Joy Tsubooka, Santa Rosa County's public information officer, in a press release.

She said Allan Kirkham told her that he also received cats from Escambia and Bay County shelters as well as local pet owners.

PAWS has not sent any cats to the rescue since February or March said Dee Thompson, PAWS director of animal service, after receiving word that the Sheriff's Office was investigating the rescue.
